Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to become an events manager?
I started my career in Hastings in 2023 in the front office team progressing from receptionist to supervisor and lending a hand in functions where I could. I’ve always enjoyed meeting with new people and my main goal has always been ensuring a positive experience for guests, so the move to events manager seemed like the perfect next step for me. I get a lot of satisfaction from the challenge of planning and organising events and seeing an initial enquiry become a successful event
What does your typical day look like in your role?
My day starts with a management team meeting to discuss what we have going on that day so that we’re all prepared before I start on my administrative work which includes responding to enquiries to finalising details for upcoming events as well as all the financial bits!
What type of events do you primarily manage (e.g corporate, social, weddings, conferences)?
I mostly manage small and large conferences but being a neighbourhood hotel also brings in social events such as birthdays and anniversary parties as well as some weddings.
What do you enjoy most about being an events manager?
I enjoy that no two days are the same so it’s never boring. Some events are booked months to years in advance, so you develop a working relationship from being in contact with the organiser so frequently so I really love to see an event through to the end and see a happy client – especially when it’s a special day for them like a wedding.
What are some of the challenges you face as an events manager?
Different challenges arise from different events but something that can occur in all events is last minute changes. From a change in numbers to a really specific dietary requirement that needs to be catered for so the challenge is being able to be on top of things at all times to make sure everyone’s aware and ensuring we can meet expectations whilst also managing the daily tasks.
What advice would you give someone who is considering a career in event management?
Don’t be afraid to show your personality and creative side and provide ideas. I think being personable and honest allows others to see that you want to do your best for them and their event rather than just doing your job. It also helps to build relationships with both your colleagues and clients which makes the job even more enjoyable.
What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone looking to create a memorable event?
Don’t overcomplicate things. Keeping things simple but doing it well makes an event look flawless. Also add your own personal touches – people sometimes overlook the smaller things but adding a small custom detail never goes unnoticed
